Why Alfa
Why Another Australian Labradoodle Breed Registry? Why ALFA?
It is a valid question to ask why there is a need for another Labradoodle Breed Resistry. The popularity of the Australian Labradoodle has prompted a number of different breed registries to be set up, to cater for the explosion of new breeders, but not all are committed to the authenticity of the breed as it was created and developed by the Founders of the breed. Some registries openly state that they do not agree with the vision of the Breed Founders and that they intend to follow their own path for the future. Some Labradoodle registries accept additional breeds into their 'mix' including Cockapoos and other derivatives. In some cases these breeding sanctions are introduced by less than experienced board members and there have been cases of authentic pedigrees being altered on record without reference to the breeder of the dog/s in question. Accountability and credibility have been lost. Several attempts have been made over the years to differentiate between the mix and match "Labradoodles" and the authentic "Australian Labradoodle" including the introduction of the trademarked symbol ASD (Australian Service Dog Labradoodle)
In particular the name 'Multigenerational' or 'Multigen' is often used to describe any mix or cross bred which is beyond the first generation of the Labrador cross Poodle. Many shed their coats, many have different temperament and personality and are quite different to the authentic Australian Labradoodle.
The following infusions of PURE breeds were done at carefully researched timeframes and for specific reasons in selected bloodlines, during the creation and development of the authentic Australian Labradoodle. They should not be used again. Along with the original widely unrelated Poodles and Labradors used, the total of six pure breeds which developed the Australian Labradoodle have provided a wide and diverse genetic base for the future.
PURE Irish Water Spaniel, PURE English & American Cocker Spaniel, PURE Soft Coated Wheaten (two unrelated IRISH Lines Only)
if the breed is to be recognizable a few years from now strict measures need to be taken to protect the bloodlines from being destroyed. ALFA (The Australian Labradoodle Founders Alliance) is not expected to be popular amongst the majority of breeders because of its strict regulations and requirements. ALFA is not about winning popularity with breeders en masse, it is about protecting the breed for generations to come and supporting the minority of breeders who are committed to the future of the Breed. Breeders who have aligned themselves with ALFA are sending a clear message to the public that they are serious about breeding the Australian Labradoodle as it was created and intended to be.
